How Much Does a Magician
Cost in Sydney?
One of the first questions people ask when planning entertainment and looking for a magician is, "How much does it cost to hire a magician in Sydney?", followed by "Why are they so expensive!?"
It’s a fair question. If you look around, you’ll find quotes ranging from $300 to over $3,000.
Why is there such a massive difference!?
Let's break it down, within the entertainment industry there are people who do it as a hobby, part time or full time. Those who do it as a hobby or part time are able to charge lower prices, either because they're new to the industry and are looking for the experience to build their portfolio or they do it for the love of the art and this is just a supplement to their main income.
For those who are magicians full time however, they can't afford to charge $300 and make a living full time. A super basic example to highlight why is there's 52 weeks in a year, if a magician does one event each week charging even $500 per gig, they would make $26,000 a year, which isn't a good income for someone trying to do this full time. Now obviously I'm not taking into consideration a whole host of other factors (such as doing more gigs, bills etc..) but hopefully it gives you a better idea of what's happening, and if you're wondering what a magician does the rest of the time, we're usually working hard on our business, marketing and of course magic to be better magicians in order to bring the best magic possible to events like yours!
Just like booking a photographer or a venue, you aren't just paying for the time spent at the event—you are paying for reliability, experience, and the guarantee of a successful performance.
Based on current industry standards in Sydney, here is a guide to what you can expect to pay.
1. The Beginner/Hobbyist
Price Range: $300 – $600
-
Who they are: Usually talented enthusiasts, students, or those who perform magic as a side hobby.
-
What to expect: They often have a handful of strong tricks but may lack the "crowd control" and social experience needed for high-pressure events.
-
The Risk: Beginners often lack Public Liability Insurance and the professional polish required for formal settings. While they are a budget-friendly option for casual backyard parties, there is a higher risk of the performance feeling "unpolished" or awkward.
2. The Semi-Professional/Professional
Price Range: $1,000 – $2,500
-
Who they are: This is the industry standard for high-quality entertainment. These are dedicated performers (like myself) with years of experience and a track record of successful events.
-
What to expect: At this level, you are paying for certainty. A professional arrives early, is impeccably dressed, and has the psychological skill to read a room and engage every guest. Whether it’s close-up magic at a wedding or a stand-up show for a corporate dinner, the performance is seamless and sophisticated.
-
The Value: This fee covers professional-grade equipment, full Public Liability Insurance, and the peace of mind that your entertainment is in the hands of an expert.
3. The Top-Tier/Celebrity Magician
Price Range: $2,500 – $5,000+
-
Who they are: Performers with significant television credits, international awards, or a high-profile "brand name."
-
What to expect: You are paying for the "prestige" of having a known name at your event. The magic is world-class, but a significant portion of the fee is for the performer's celebrity status.
-
The Value: Best suited for high-budget luxury galas or VIP corporate events where the host wants to make a massive statement.
What Factors Influence the Quote?
While the ranges above are a good baseline, three main factors will influence your final quote:
-
The Date (Peak Season): Demand for entertainers skyrockets in November and December for Christmas parties, as well as on Saturday nights year-round. Expect premium pricing during these peak times, just as you would for venues or catering.
-
Travel: Most Sydney magicians include travel within the metro area (e.g., CBD, Inner West, North Shore). If your event is in the Hunter Valley, Blue Mountains, or Southern Highlands, a travel fee will be added to cover fuel and travel time.
-
Packaging: The prices listed are just a guide but if you're looking to have close up roving magic and a stage show expect a higher price package for those services.
-
Customisation: Do you need the CEO to magically appear? Do you want a trick customized to highlight your new product? Bespoke magic requires scripting and rehearsal time, which is reflected in the fee.

The Bottom Line: Price vs. Value
When you hire entertainment, it can make or break the atmosphere of your event. A budget magician might save you a few hundred dollars, but a professional ensures your guests are laughing, engaged, and raving about the experience long after the party ends.
